The Tripple Dee Recording Studio also is something called the Marcus Garvey Youth Development Center, and beautiful murals of scenes from Black history have been painted on the walls.

22nd Street South, known as the “Deuce Deuce”, is the historic heart of Black St. Petersburg, and once a street of entertainment to rival Memphis’ Beale Street or Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn. The years have not necessarily been kind to 22nd Street, but a number of historic buildings remain, including the Royal Theater, which is now used as a youth performance center. Nearby streets have an incredible number of churches (at least one in every block, it seems) as well as an interesting wood-carving shop and a recording studio, where I met the rapper Fo Sheezy who was hard at work recording material for an upcoming album or mixtape.
