Stax Academy

The Ranchero is an old-school place along old Highway 61 in Clarksdale, and a definite must-visit for lovers of great steaks and seafood. On the particular night I was there, the Juke Joint Festival had the place packed to capacity, particularly the 65 or so students from the Stax Academy in Memphis. They thanked the restaurant staff by singing a lovely version of “There Is A Balm In Gilead”, an unexpected performance for employees and patrons alike.

The Stax Academy and Soulsville Charter School operate in the South Memphis neighborhood where Stax Records was located. The Academy trains young people to be musicians, while the charter school is a publically-funded high school. The Stax Academy drumline was in Clarksdale during Juke Joint Festival warming up for their performance on the Delta Blues Museum Stage.

On October 1, the Memphis chapter of The Recording Academy sponsored an event called Grammy GPS at the Stax Academy, while the Memphis Music Foundation sponsored the Plug In Memphis event next door at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Both events were well-attended.
