A Clandestine Hideaway on the Covington Square

To be a large city, Covington, Tennessee does not have much in the way of fine dining. There is a lot of fast food, and some local eating places, but not much where one can sit down and order from a menu, other than Applebees. The exception is a place that you might easily miss if you were not looking for it. The Cellar, a self-proclaimed “prohibition bar” is located in the basement of a building on the east side of the town square, and is accessible only from the back. A pretty outdoor brick patio features decoupaged newspapers with many of the pivotal events of the prohibition era. Inside, the ambiance is dark, with the kind of ornate lighting one might expect in a speakeasy. In keeping with the theme, the menu is heavy on the kind of meat and potatoes fare that 1920s gangsters likely enjoyed. For my first visit, I selected the bacon cheeseburger, and was quite impressed with my meal. The well-seasoned and juicy burger was accompanied by fairly thin and crispy French fries. In addition, I was pleased with the service, which was quite attentive. The Cellar also features several different cuts of steak, pastas, chicken and fish and chips. It’s definitely worth a visit, and unlike anything else…..even in the bigger city of Memphis.
