A rehearsal for a wedding I was asked to play music for had me down by the Mississippi state line on an early Saturday afternoon. And since I was heading to Coldwater later for the second day of the annual GOAT Picnic sponsored by the Rising Star Fife and Drum Band, I decided to grab a lunch somewhere in Mississippi. Thinking of various places in Southaven and Hernando just did not excite me, and then it occurred to me that the Home Place Pastures farm store was open for lunch on Saturdays. So I headed out there and made it just a half hour before closing.
The last time I ate at Home Place Pastures, it was a stormy Friday night where I enjoyed a steak dinner. My friend and I were actually the last customers served that night, because a tornado nearby on Highway 310 had knocked out power to the store, and although steaks could be grilled without power, the open doors and windows flooded the restaurant with flies! The food that night had been excellent. Today, I wanted to try a hamburger, and I chose a double burger with strictly cheese and bacon. Home Place Pastures produces both pork and beef, so both my burgers and bacon were sourced from their own farm. It would not be an exaggeration to say that this was perhaps the best burger I have ever eaten. And it came accompanied by shoestring fries, which I always love because they get done quickly and generally have a good golden brown color. Soft drinks come in cans, and the ambiance is understandably rustic, but the food is worth the drive.
Of course the Home Place Pastures store is a store too. One can buy various steaks, burgers, bacon, eggs, honeys and various seasonings there during operating hours. Lunches are almost a daily thing. Dinners are once a month and require a reservation.
