Senatobia, Mississippi is a lot bigger than its nearest neighbor to the south, Como, and it is a county seat and college town. But it has lagged behind its neighbors when it comes to dining, for a very interesting reason. Up until a few years ago, Tate County was dry and did not permit the sale of liquor, but Senatobia has legalized liquor by the drink, and gradually, dining options have started to improve as the town begins to renovate its older downtown.
Woodchucks is Senatobia’s most recent dining option, a roomy bar on Main Street which takes its name from its main non-food activity, axe-throwing, a new bar sport that has been taking the country by storm in recent years. I have not tried it, but its adherents say it’s fun and that it relieves stress and anger. Woodchucks has six lanes for throwing axes, as well as a pool table, big screen televisions on sports, and a boxing arcade game. But my reason for paying them a visit on the Fourth of July was food.
I soon found that the difficulty was in deciding what exactly to eat. Woodchucks is not technically one restaurant, but rather three. The menu bearing the restaurant’s name is mainly burgers, chicken, sandwiches, hot dogs and sandwiches. Retro Dough Pizzeria is a pizza menu which also has pastas and hot sub sandwiches. A third menu, The Hideout, begins at 8 PM, requires an entry fee, and features small plates and cocktails.
Although making a choice was difficult, I finally settled on a pepperoni and bacon pizza, since they were having a discount on three-topping pizzas that day. Woodchucks is significantly different from both Como’s Windy City Grill and Sardis’ Tribecca Alley Cafe, but it is a very good thin and crispy crust pizza for a very reasonable price. Service was attentive and pleasant, and the surroundings were equally enjoyable, despite the few customers that were in on the holiday.
Because Woodchucks offers so many different food options, it is great place to take friends, as there will likely be something to please nearly every palate. I certainly hope to return to try a burger very soon.
