Until the last few years, Memphis has been fairly limited in bakery options, particularly ones that offer desserts and sweets, but more recently there has been a trend in Asian-themed bakeries opening. offering cakes, tarts, breads and coffees. Sweet Musings, a Taiwanese bakery, opened in late 2024 in the Cordova neighborhood of Memphis, and more recently in East Memphis on Perkins Road. I am not sure what makes it a Taiwanese bakery, but most of the baked goods would not seem strange to an average American customer, and there definitely seems to be a French influence to the offerings. There are strawberry cream puffs, and various cakes and donuts in a number of flavors. I chose a Black Forest cake which combined chocolate, whipped cream and cherries, and it was absolutely delicious. I ordered a Vietnamese coffee to go with it, and as I expected, this is the traditional cafe phapp which I had in Houston, a dark French roast coffee with heated sweetened condensed milk added. All that was quite good, but I also noticed something called Japanese cheesecake. and a handful of savory items, including a bacon bun and a pork bun.
Prices are not particularly cheap, but not unreasonable, and the place exudes an atmosphere of elegance and comfort. Better yet, it is open until 8:30 PM during the week and 9:00 PM on weekends, which is far later than most other bakeries, making Sweet Musings a great option for an after-dinner or after-show treat.
