Just as sure as fall and football season, every September, the man they call Joe Hall throws a car show at the old Lum Guffin estate on Guffin Road in Bartlett. It is one of the big events for the Black community that lives in the Bartlett and Raleigh area, and usually attracts a lot of people that I went to high school with. Unfortunately, this year, I missed both my high school reunion and most of the car show due to a play I was involved with in Covington. By the time I made it out to Guffin Road, a lot of people had already left. Usually I run into Randy Mickens and Morris Jefferson, but this year I did not see anyone I knew.
However, there were still a lot of really good-looking cars and trucks present, and a lot of folks were out playing horseshoes, which is something I don’t recall from previous years. There had been a barbecue trailer, and although in previous years there has been a DJ, I did not see one this year, maybe because he had already left. People were beginning to leave and head home. Although I am sorry I missed the better part of it, including the judging, I am glad I caught some of the show. It is an annual event, and not to be missed.
