Colt, Arkansas is not really on the beaten path at all, but it is one of several suburbs of the small former industrial city of Forrest City. The town is located nearly halfway between Forrest City and Wynne, where the Military Road, the oldest road in Arkansas, crosses both Highway 1 and the railroad tracks. Beside the tracks is a hundred-year-old general store building which has become a restaurant popular with locals who know about it.
Greg and Jim’s has a comfortable down-home atmosphere, and a comfort food menu with something for nearly everyone. There are extensive breakfast options, and I noticed a baking pan full of biscuits behind the waitress who took our order at the cash register. But with it being 3 in the afternoon, I chose a double bacon cheeseburger with barbecue sauce, and not noticing the tater tots on the menu, I chose the crinkle cut fries. My dining companion chose a smoked sausage with cheese and cole slaw. Prices were reasonable, and the food was good. Besides burgers and salads, they offer chicken strips, catfish and barbecue. On Friday and Saturday nights, they offer ribeye steaks and seafood at night, and on those days, they close between lunch and dinner to set up for the night menu.
The food was thoroughly satisfying, but even more outstanding are the fried pies. I tried a chocolate and peanut butter fried pie, something I had never seen before. Since I love chocolate and peanut butter together, I had to try it, and I was quite impressed. Fried pies are really only good when served hot, and rather than warm-up previously prepared fired pies, Greg and Jim’s keeps the raw pies cold, and fries them in the deep fryer when ordered. Dusted with powdered sugar, they are a delicacy, almost a cross between a Southern fried pie and a beignet, remarkably light compared to other fried pies I have tried. Greg and Jim’s would be worth a visit for the pies alone. As it is , I hope to return to try the breakfast, other lunch items, and the steaks. The murals on the outside of the store tell a story too, combining patriotic motives with images of hunting, which is prominent in the area. Greg and Jim’s makes a fun outing from Memphis for a great meal and an adventure.
