The Heritage Blues Orchestra burst on the scene unexpectedly last year with the release of their debut album
And Still I Rise. Their unique approach of performing the entire range of blues antecedents and derivatives is reminiscent of the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s approach to jazz. The Heritage Blues Quartet is a smaller group taken from the larger orchestra, and it is this group which appeared at the Horseshoe Blues Tent at this year’s Beale Street Music Festival. The group thrilled the crowd with a repertoire that ranged from traditional and modern blues to old-school gospel.
