I had to travel to Bolivar on a Saturday to play music for a renewal of vows ceremony, and afterwards, I was hungry. I don’t get to Bolivar often, and the last time I did get out that way, I had eaten at a place called The Biscuitry, but it had closed in the interim. But the people who owned the Biscuity have since opened Simon’s Fish Camp just down the street, and I have been on their mailing list since they opened, probably because of my previous visits to the Biscuitry.
Simon’s is a dark and inviting spot across the street from Maxwell’s Supermarket, and a couple of doors south of the Luez Theater. It has the look of a place that is going to be expensive, but there are some really affordable options, including burgers and a brisket sandwich. I asked my waitress whether she would recommend a burger or the brisket sandwich, and she admitted she had not tried either, but she said she sells a lot more brisket sandwiches than burgers, so I ordered the brisket.
Ordering brisket can be risky outside of Texas, and more often than not I have been disappointed, but on this night, I was not disappointed at all. For $16, my sandwich came with a huge, thick slice of smoked brisket, with the pink smoke ring visible, and so many French fries I had to ask for a to-go box, Simon’s has a good, sweet barbecue sauce, and I was also amazed at how quickly my food was ready. Besides the sandwiches, Simon’s has catfish, barbecue and steaks, making it the right place for a casual night out or a formal dinner. Beyond the dining room, there is also a cozy bar where a country singer-songwriter was performing. Dessert was offered, but I had no room for it. Simon’s is definitely worth a visit.
