Despite the name, the Blue Dog Bistros in Gulfport and Ocean Springs, Mississippi are not affiliated with the famous painter George Rodrigue, who became world-famous for his iconic paintings of blue dogs. But they do offer a great breakfast, and at least in the case of the Gulfport location, in a most beautiful setting along Bayou Bernard, amidst ancient oak trees.
Billing themselves as “where the coast does brunch,” the Blue Dog Bistro offers fairly normal breakfast fare, but in a luxurious waterfront setting. The main dining room is done in bright white and blue, and has a sunny and cheerful ambiance. There is also rooftop seating upstairs when the weather is pleasant enough. Most restaurants can do breakfast well enough, but the Blue Dog has some nice touches to usual breakfast fare, like pan toasting the halves of the biscuits in butter, and offering roasted potatoes instead of the usual hash browns.
Since the bistro is open until 3 PM, there is also a lunch menu, featuring burgers, cochon au last and even grilled salmon. There is also a full barista menu, such as one would find at the best coffee houses. Altogether, the Blues Dog Bistro is the best way to start one’s day on the Mississippi Coast.
