Little signs along Highway 59 alerted me to something that sadly is fairly unusual these days, a new business opening in the small Tipton County, Tennessee town of Mason. Could it really be that a bakery was opening in that little town? A drive through there late on a Saturday proved disappointing, as the place was there, but closed. But on a weekday afternoon after a Bozo’s Bar-B-Q lunch, I found SugarSpoon Bakery and Pharmacy open, and walked in to see about it.

Yes, you read that right. Bakery AND pharmacy. While it seems an odd combination, Mason was desperately in need of both. There had been no pharmacy since the Taylor Drug Store closed on the corner of Front and Main. And there are far bigger towns than Mason that have no bakery. But it was in fact the baked goods that brought me in, and they are worth a visit for sure. The main star of the show is exquisite cupcakes, and they are beauties to behold. I enjoyed a chocolate peanut butter crunch cupcake, but there were turtle cupcakes, buttercream cupcakes and even a vegan chocolate cupcake. There are also cookies, doughnuts, and Keurig coffee. Hours are a little limited, however. They are open 11 AM to 4 PM Tuesday through Friday, and until noon on Saturday.
