One night I walked into the old Sound Warehouse store on Poplar Avenue (where Swanky’s Taco Shop is now) and bought a rap tape called Controversy by an artist I’d never heard of named Willie D. The cover made it look interesting enough, and besides that, he was bold enough to have a song called “F__k the KKK.” I was from that day forward a fan of his, and of course I then discovered and bought the Geto Boys next album as well. I would eventually learn to be a fan of Scarface‘s solo work too, and that of Bushwick Bill. So, like so many other performances at this year’s SXSW, the Geto Boys’ show at the RedBull #SoundSelect stage gave me a nostalgic return to my younger days. Of course the group performed most of their trademark hits, including “Damn, It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta” and “My Mind’s Playing Tricks On Me”, but the high point for me was when they announced that they will be doing a tour together this summer, so apparently the performance at SXSW was not a one-time event. Let’s hope a new album is also in the works.
