Public Enemy and its iconic lead rapper Chuck D were another nostalgic reference to my youth, in particular my years at Memphis State University, so I was thrilled at the opportunity to see them live for the first time. Some in the crowd were disappointed at the absence of Flava Flav (he was said to have “missed his flight), but PE still put on an amazing show full of familiar hits, as well as new songs from their pair of 2012 albums
“Most of My Heroes…” and
“The Evil Empire of Everything.” There was also a live band to supplement the DJ, including a bass player that Chuck D introduced as being from Memphis. Altogether, my first time seeing Public Enemy live was well worth the effort.
