RL Boyce and Como Breakdown performing a standard Hill Country blues tune at the Cat Head stage in Clarksdale during Juke Joint Fest 2013. This tune first came to my attention through an R. L. Burnside 45 which I had on Dr. David Evans’ wonderful High Water label from Memphis State University. The title left me quite confused, but over the years I’ve come to the conclusion that in the Mississippi Hill Country a “jumper” was the same thing as a “rider”- a lover or at least a sometimes companion. The “hanging out on the line” part of the lyric still seems a little obscure, however. Any insights from readers would be appreciated.
