At the intersection near Shorty’s Burgers and Fries is a pair of golden cowboy boots hanging from telephone wires. Shoes hanging in this way are often seen in cities, and are a source of some confusion- some say they represent gang activity or drug activity, or are a warning to snitches, or commemorate someone who has died or been murdered. But what these golden boots would represent is truly a mystery to me. The mystery only deepened later when I saw a similar pair in East Austin hung the same way. With the week of SXSW also being the week of Rodeo Austin one wonders if there’s some connection to the rodeo.
