Building Your Burger at Burgerworx in Downtown Asheville

Figuring that I would reach Asheville by dinner time, I scanned Yelp on my iPhone and scouted out a place called Burgerworx in downtown Asheville, and it proved to be a delight. Located in a large downtown mall called the Grove Arcade, Burgerworx is burgers on an assembly line system. You take a sheet and a pencil, and follow the steps (sort of like a 1040 tax return form, except it’s more fun and the result is more delicious). You can choose your burger (there’s beef, veggie, double beef, hot dog, chicken breast, an egg sandwich or a cheese sandwich), your bun, your cheese, free toppings and sauces, and then a few premium toppings which cost a dollar more, such as an egg, bacon, chili or mushrooms. Freshly cut fries are also available, and are a must-have, as they are some of the best I’ve ever eaten. The burgers at Burgerworx seem a little smaller than the one I had at M. L. Rose in Nashville earlier in the day, but a bacon cheeseburger and fries still left me feeling pleasantly full. A minor quibble is the drink fountain, which offers only Royal Crown products. I know that R.C. has a true place in Southern folklore, especially alongside the famous Moon Pie, but their diet equivalent is the truly awful Diet Rite cola. Even so, Burgerworx is worth a visit anytime you’re in Asheville. You can also visit them at http://www.burgerworxavl.com/.
