Legendary Jazz Drummer Alvin Fielder's Trio Live at @TheYellowScarf in Jackson

Meridian native Alvin Fielder was in New Orleans at Xavier University studying pharmacy when he met New Orleans’ legendary jazz drummer Ed Blackwell, and then …

On Sunday 5/13/12, I decided to drive down to Tuscaloosa, AL for a performance by the Alvin Fielder Houston Quartet, the latest group put together by my friend and mentor Alvin Fielder, the incredible Mississippi jazz drummer. The drive down involved some occasional rain, and when I arrived in Northport, I found that there was a Wintzell’s Oyster House there, so I decided to have dinner there before the show, and  it was a good choice. Not only is the food great, but the view of the Black Warrior River and downtown Tuscaloosa is beautiful.

Directly across the street from the Carver Museum is Trailer Space Records and East Side Pies pizza. Trailer Space is a performance venue, and was featuring a girl band called the High Class Hillbillies when I visited. I had always thought of Trailer Space Records as more of a punk-rock store, but they had an amazing selection of avant-garde jazz, including the latest CD from the group Yells at Eels, which features my friend Alvin Fielder on drums.
