Two days before Christmas, the Hi-Tone in Midtown Memphis was the scene of an all-star gala rap show with a live band, featuring many of Memphis’ best lyricists, old and new. The DJ and announcer for the occasion was none other than Radio MemphisDJ Bay, and the line-up of performers included such Memphis icons as Tori Whodat, Al Kapone and Frayser Boy, as well as guest appearances from Memphis veterans like DJ Zirk. But there were also some outstanding new artists in the house, including a new Memphis rapper named Wala Wyse who was quite impressive, as well as the solo debut of Tune C, Al Kapone’s long-time hype man and a former member of the 1990’s hip-hop group NationWide. Tune performed his new single “Naturally”, one of five recent songs that have been recorded toward his upcoming album The Great Flood. Also fun was an impromptu collaboration between the band’s drummer and DJ Bay during an extended break between live acts. Such drum/DJ duets have caught on in markets like New York, Vegas and Miami, but have not been seen as often in the Memphis market. Altogether, it was a cheerful holiday tribute to our city’s hip-hop past and future.

Wednesday night is not usually a big entertainment night in Memphis, but on October 29, many of Memphis’ best industry figures came together at Purple Haze downtown to celebrate the release of veteran rapper Frayser Boy’s new album Not No Moe on the Phixieous label. Frayser’s own DJ Bay was on the ones and twos, and Tune C, DJ Zirk, Miscellaneous,Carlos Sargent, DJ Care Bear, Lil Wyte, Snootie Wild, Jason Da Hater,Suavo J, Louis Goggins of the Memphis Flyer and Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell of the Recording Academy and Royal Studios were among the attendees. Frayser Boy, Lil Wyte and Miscellaneous performed a few songs from the album toward the end of the night, and the event was all love, fun and food.

“Self Made 3” Listening Party Memphis Sponsored by @MaybachMusicGrp @MMGSelfMade @DJQMemphis

Last night, September 12, 2013, Memphis’ Young Avenue Sound recording studio was the setting for a clandestine listening party for Maybach Music Group‘s new Self Made 3 album featuring French Montana, Meek Mill, Omarion, Rick Ross, Yo Gotti and more. Despite a rumor that Rick Ross would be present, he didn’t appear, but a lot of other celebrities did, including Hot 107‘s DJ Q, Memphis rap artist Skool Boy, Select-O-Hits’ DJ Bay, Maybach artist Whole Slab AKA Slab McNab AKA Deuce Poppi, Memphis rapper Urban Jones and CEO Miami Mike. In addition there were lots of models, plenty of Belaire Rose to drink, and plenty of wings from Wing Stop.

The Music Exchange September Edition at @HardRockMemphis @mixtapemag @bigedddouble #TMXMemphis

On Wednesday September 11th, the September edition of The Music Exchange/Memphis Record Pool took place at the Hard Rock Cafe on Beale Street, bringing out an all-star crowd of Memphis’ best DJ’s and artists, including DJ 007, Gangsta Blac, Miscellaneous, Snootie Wild, Chiccen, Urban Jones and DJ Bay of Select-O-Hits. The restaurant was filled to overflowing, and was literally standing room only.

Launch of #TMXMemphis @TheMixtapeMag at the Sahara Cafe and Grill

The first record pool in Memphis in many years was launched last night, February 27, at the Sahara Cafe and Grill on Ridgeway. It’s called The Music Exchange, or TMXMemphis, and it’s being sponsored by The Mixtape Magazine. Last night’s hosts were Edward “Big Ed” Gardner and DJ Kojak, with music provided by Hot 107’s DJ J-Rock, and a lot of other DJ’s were in the house, including Memphis’ legendary DJ Care Bear, strip club DJ Herschel B, and DJ Bay. Memphis-based Select-O-Hits was also present, as well as a number of familiar and not-so-familiar Memphis artists. TMX Memphis offers artists a chance to get their music exposed to and critiqued by DJ’s, as well as a chance to network with industry movers and shakers and other artists. This event will be held six times a year in Memphis.

Kevin “A & R” Shine of The Firm came to Memphis and sponsored a Tastemakers Music Networking event at Zodiac Monday August 15, 2011. Lots of local industry people were there, including DJ 007, Wes Phillips and DJ Bay of Select-O-Hits, Miscellaneous, Trap House Studios, and probably some I forgot. Ultimately, it was a very informative event, and a great way for Memphis artists to build their network.

Drumma Boy’s Listening Party at R. Sole Memphis

Drumma Boy had the listening party for his new mixtape at a hip-hop clothing and shoe boutique called R. Sole in the Laurelwood Shopping Center, and that was really great because I wouldn’t have known about that shop otherwise. A lot of Memphis rap artists, producers and promoters were in the house, including DJ Bay and myself from Select-o-Hits, First Degree, G.K. and Li’l Pat.Â
