The Tripple Dee Recording Studio also is something called the Marcus Garvey Youth Development Center, and beautiful murals of scenes from Black history have been painted on the walls.

22nd Street South, known as the “Deuce Deuce”, is the historic heart of Black St. Petersburg, and once a street of entertainment to rival Memphis’ Beale Street or Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn. The years have not necessarily been kind to 22nd Street, but a number of historic buildings remain, including the Royal Theater, which is now used as a youth performance center. Nearby streets have an incredible number of churches (at least one in every block, it seems) as well as an interesting wood-carving shop and a recording studio, where I met the rapper Fo Sheezy who was hard at work recording material for an upcoming album or mixtape.

New Millennium Fashions on South 34th Street in St. Petersburg is a clothing store, of course, but it is also a full-line music store, full of CDs and DVDs. I even found a book about the history of Carnival in Trinidad!

Da Plugg Music and More in Tallahassee

Is there still a place in the music industry for the concept of record stores? Clearly some young entrepreneurs think so. Da Plugg Music and More is a really-cool new record store on South Adams Street in Tallahassee, not far from the FAMU campus. They have all the latest hip-hop releases, as well as mixtapes, magazines and DVDs. They are worth a visit.
