Closing the Alabama Art Kitchen with Alvin Fielder’s Houston Quartet

The Alvin Fielder Houston Quartet was performing at the Alabama Art Kitchen in downtown Tuscaloosa. Sadly, it was the last night for the Kitchen, which is moving out of the historic Victorian building on University Boulevard which has been their home since 2010. Ultimately, they intend to continue their arts workshops, but they will no longer have a building.

On Sunday 5/13/12, I decided to drive down to Tuscaloosa, AL for a performance by the Alvin Fielder Houston Quartet, the latest group put together by my friend and mentor Alvin Fielder, the incredible Mississippi jazz drummer. The drive down involved some occasional rain, and when I arrived in Northport, I found that there was a Wintzell’s Oyster House there, so I decided to have dinner there before the show, and  it was a good choice. Not only is the food great, but the view of the Black Warrior River and downtown Tuscaloosa is beautiful.

Memphis Black Arts Alliance Jazz-A-Fire Quartet

Jazz-A-Fire is the jazz ensemble of the Memphis Black Arts Alliance in South Memphis. It includes such great Memphis musicians as trumpeter Nokie Taylor, drummer James Sexton, pianist Steven Lee and bassist Kent Suggs, and runs a monthly jam session at the Alliance headquarters on Bellevue. Here they are performing for the crowd at Melrose Stadium during the Pop-Up Arts Festival in Orange Mound, 4/29/12

The former Sole location in the Westin Hotel in downtown Memphis has become Bleu Restaurant and Lounge, an upscale bar and restaurant directly across from the Fed Ex Forum that often features live jazz. Last Thursday, April 19, they celebrated the opening of their new outdoor patio with live music and free food and drink. #MemphisRising

Miles Davis’ nephew Vince Wilburn Jr. plays the drums at the Victory Grill, East Austin, SXSW, March 15, 2012

The close of the Miles Davis Tribute event at the Victory Grill was an open jam session for all musicians, featuring a number of performers including Miles’ nephew, drummer Vince Wilburn Jr. March 15, 2012

The Historic Victory Grill, East Austin

The Victory Grill is one of the oldest African-American nightclubs in the country, and one of only a select few stops on the “chitlin’ circuit” to still be functioning in 2012. Of course it sometimes books rock bands these days, and the front has become an excellent coffee bar called the Purple Bean. But it is very much still in operation, and during SXSW sponsored a daylong tribute to the memory of Miles Davis.
