The Memphis chapter of The Recording Academy had their Grammy GPS event yesterday at the Stax Music Academy in South Memphis, with an array of speakers that included Steve Jordan, activist rapper Talib Kweli, southern rapper and producer Fiend, and Mississippi poet and activist Charlie Braxton. The event also attracted a number of local Memphis artists, including Scott Bomar of the Bo-Keys, Al Kapone, Knowledge Nick, Cities Aviv, Miscellaneous, James Alexander of the Bar-Kays, Jason Da Hater and Montana Trax. Oakhaven vs. Mitchell @ J.P. Freeman Stadium, Memphis, 2012
I went out to J. P. Freeman Stadium Thursday night to catch the Oakhaven-Mitchell game, and I was impressed by the musicianship of both bands, but especially Oakhaven, a band I had not heard before. Their repertoire includes both traditional marches and current hits, and they play cleanly and in tune. Memphis TN, 9/27/12
The Westwood Community Roundup will be Saturday, September 29 in the parking lot of Rayford’s All-in-1 Hot Wings. It’s free, and will include performances from La Chat, the Kinfolk Thugz and blues artist Little Howling Wolf. The event runs from 1-8 PM.
