Thursday night, the Brooks Museum of Art sponsored a showing of the remarkable documentary Thunder Soul, the amazing history of the Kashmere Stage Band from Kashmere High School in the Fifth Ward of Houston, TX. From 1968-1977 this band was the best high school jazz band in America. Those of us who watched the film got an unexpected benefit, as pianist Craig Baldwin and another member of the band were in Memphis and took questions from the audience after the movie. 7/12/12

Last Sunday, the blues singer Redd Velvet and I headed down to Central Bar-B-Que in Midtown Memphis to check out an outdoor performance by Memphis folk/rock artist Nancy Apple and her band. It was great food, great fun and great music. 7/8/12

Saturday night, the Douglass High School Athletic Association sponsored a blues concert at the Snack Bar on Chelsea, featuring Big Don Valentine with the Charles McDaniel Blues Band. The event was held out on the parking lot in front of the building, with plenty of barbecue and cold drinks. 6/16/12
