Open until 2 AM most nights and until 3 AM on weekends, Cafe Intermezzo is a late-night hangout for Atlanta. Intermezzo’s coffee menu alone is three pages, the liquors another four or five pages. The exquisite desserts aren’t on the menu at all- they are under glass instead, where an employe called a “tour guide” describes them in detail as you point to them and ask about them. Not a place to worry about weight, calories or cholesterol!
Midtown
Lightning Malcolm joins Cedric Burnside on stage, and the crowd takes the dancefloor at the Hi-Tone.
Cedric Burnside carries on the legacy of his grandfather, legendary hill country blues guitarist R. L. Burnside. But what is unique about Cedric is first of all his amazing talent as a singer, a guitarist, a songwriter and a drummer. Even more impressive is how effortlessly he adapts the trance-like hill country style into the grooves of modern funk and rock-and-roll. The Hi-Tone, with its walls lined with multi-colored lights and old Memphis posters and album-covers, provided the perfect juke-joint ambiance for Cedric’s electrified hill-country stomps. An unexpected reunion with Lightning Malcolm capped the night’s festivities, coaxing the crowd out of their seats and onto the dancefloor.Â
San Diego indie band The Donkeys on Dead Ocean Records opened up last night’s live music at the venerable Hi-Tone in midtown Memphis, and their style exhibited a rootsy, soul-influenced vibe that sounded more Memphis than California. Altogether, an impressive set of tuneful music.Â
The hot weather came early, but YoLo has the coolest thing to hit Memphis in years-authentic Italian gelato. They also have great frozen yogurt made from local ingredients, locally-sourced toppings, and, at the Midtown location, awesome bakery items from LadyBugg Bakery. Pay them a visit and beat the heat! And if you’re going to Bonnaroo, they’ll be there with a mobile store.
