The Stooges Brass Band at the Levitt Shell in Overton Park, Memphis, TN, Thursday, 5/17/12
The 2012 seasons for the Levitt Shell in Memphis’ Overton Park opened with the Stooges Brass Band from New Orleans. The youthful band brings a hip-hop street edge to traditional New Orleans brass-band music, and there are enough NOLA residents in Memphis that there was soon a small group of second-liners in front of the stage, decked out in full regalia, complete with decorated umbrellas in true New Orleans style. They were just as amazing here in Memphis as they were in Oxford, MS in February. If you missed them, keep up with them at http://www.stoogesmusicgroup.com/ or like them on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/stoogesbrassbandpage. They play most Thursdays at the Hi-Ho Lounge on North Claiborne Avenue in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans, and believe me, it’s worth the drive to see them there.Â

TBC Brass band Live at Canal and Bourbon, New Orleans, September 2011
When I checked into my room at the Holiday Inn on Royal at Canal in New Orleans, I could hear a brass band playing in the distance, so before driving out to the Hi-Ho Lounge, I walked up to Bourbon Street at Canal, where the music was coming from. The band proved to be the To Be Continued Brass Band, a famous young band that I had first encountered last year when they challenged the Stooges at the latter band’s regular weekly gig at the Hi-Ho Lounge. The resulting battle in the street corner was one of those serendipities that make me love New Orleans. On this particular night I met Edward Jackson, a trombonist who also handles the business affairs for TBC, and we arranged to have a business meeting about music distribution before I left the city.Â
George Porter Jr and the Running Partners Live at @LevittShell @OvertonPark
Memphis got another great serving of New Orleans music and culture at last night’s George Porter Jr. and the Running Partners performance at the Levitt Shell in Overton Park. The only thing better than great music is getting to hear it for free!
