One of the more important Thursday night showcases at A3C was called Double Cupped Fears, an event held at Space 2 on Edgewood Avenue and sponsored by TRDON, the record label/production company that works with Memphis rapper Preauxx, Select-O-Hits, and Travis McFetridge’s Great South Bay Music. The rather diverse line-up included hip-hop lyricists like J. Sands and Planet Asia, relatively new lyrical Memphians like Tori WhoDat and Preauxx, and classic Memphis headliners like Lil Wyte, Frayser Boy and Miscellaneous. Unfortunately, the showcase got under way about thirty minutes late, and as a result, was cut short at 2:30 AM, when the venue said they were required to close due to a city ordinance. But Lil Wyte and company left the crowd hyped and eager for more.

Duwayne Burnside with Special Guest Shannon McNally (@McNally) Live at #jukejointfest

After RL Boyce finished with his performance, he was followed by Duwayne Burnside, RL Burnside’s son, who was joined on stage by the young singer-songwriter Shannon McNally and drummer Dexter Burnside. McNally, originally from Austin, Texas, relocated to Holly Springs a few years ago, and released her most recent album Small Town Talk this month, featuring the songs of the late Louisiana singer and songwriter Bobby Charles. The album exists in both vinyl and compact disc versions, and is being distributed by Memphis-based Select-O-Hits Music Distribution. According to the Juke Joint Festival schedule, Duwayne was supposed to have been joined by his brother Gary, but he told me after the performance that Gary couldn’t make it.

On Saturday January 5, 2013, the Entertainment Industry Connection came to 595 North Restaurant and Lounge in Atlanta, featuring panels and workshops, performances, a fashion show and experts on music, fashion and film. Notable industry attendees included Manny “Mad Dog” Ayala of the Coast 2 Coast DJ’s, Janie Jennings from Industry Works, Ray Hamilton of the Universal Record Pool who organized the event, David “Fort Knox” Mitchell, manager and MC extraordinaire. and John “J-Dogg” Shaw of Memphis-based Select-O-Hits Music Distribution.

The new Kentucky Headhunters album “Dixie Lullabies” is distributed by Select-O-Hits, and we were fortunate enough to have them perform for us in our warehouse in Memphis. They are really cool people and great musicians.
