Stooges Brass Band
Stooges Brass Band

Mid-South residents have probably never heard of the Stooges Brass Band, but they are one of a number of youthful organizations that are preserving the tradition of parading brass band music in New Orleans, often against astounding odds. In addition to the difficulties that young African-American men face in general, members of these bands have had to face the poverty and violence of New Orleans and then the devastation and displacement of Hurricane Katrina. Wednesday night, at Proud Larry’s in Oxford, Mississippi, area residents will have a chance to hear the Stooges in person at the Red Clay Ball fundraiser for the Yoknapatwapha Arts Council, and believe me, this band is worth the drive to Oxford, even if you live in Memphis. The tickets are $15, and that might seem a little steep, particularly the day after Valentine’s, but proceeds go to the worthy cause of furthering the arts in and around Oxford. Hopefully, I’ll see you there.

As the second-line passes through different neighborhoods, people come out of houses and businesses alike. The party spirit is infectious, and some come off their porches dancing, and occasionally even join in behind the band heading on up the street. When the parade passes a particularly-significant intersection, such as 2nd and Dryades, where the Sportsman Lounge and Wild Magnolias headquarters are located, there may be a large crowd of people gathered on the sidelines. Occasionally, the second-line itself will head into a bar or lounge for a refreshment break, or in order to salute another neighborhood or marching club.

I noticed that the Stooges have a conga player this year which I didn’t recall from last year. The percussionist reinforces the strong Cuban influence that is apparent in New Orleans brass band music.

After the TBC Brass Band ended their performance at 10 PM, there was still time to make it to the Hi-Ho Lounge for the Stooges Brass Band’s weekly Thursday night set. The Hi-Ho is a tiny venue, and every inch of it was packed with fans, some dancing as best they could despite the limited space. Out in front, vendors were selling barbecue and drinks. There was no band battle during the break this year, but a man handed me a flyer about a Young Men Olympian second-line Uptown on Sunday, and I made up my mind to go if I could.
