Founded 1963 Relaunched 2019. The Postmodern South.

22nd Street South, known as the “Deuce Deuce”, is the historic heart of Black St. Petersburg, and once a street of entertainment to rival Memphis’ Beale Street or Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn. The years have not necessarily been kind to 22nd Street, but a number of historic buildings remain, including the Royal Theater, which is now used as a youth performance center. Nearby streets have an incredible number of churches (at least one in every block, it seems) as well as an interesting wood-carving shop and a recording studio, where I met the rapper Fo Sheezy who was hard at work recording material for an upcoming album or mixtape.
