Later in the afternoon, there was a block party in South Memphis in memory of a young man called King Craddy who had been murdered several years ago. There was a DJ posted up on the block, and the rap artist Blac Youngsta was filming a new video down the street. As the evening progressed, the crowd grew larger and larger. 6/2/12
At the Smokey City Block Party In North Memphis
Smokey City is one of North Memphis’ oldest neighborhoods, allegedly named for the smoke from fires that early residents used to cook their meals and warm their houses. Each summer, the neighborhood sponsors a block party and picnic with a DJ, kids’ activities and plenty of grilled chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs. 6/2/12

The Alvin Fielder Houston Quartet Live at the Alabama Art Kitchen, Tuscaloosa, 2012
The Alvin Fielder Houston Quartet consists of David Dove on trombone, Damon Smith on bass, Jason Jackson on saxophone and Alvin Fielder on the drums. On Sunday 5/13/12 they played a first set of free jazz that lasted about an hour, and after an intermission, a 20-minute second set. It was altogether a great way to end the Alabama Art Kitchen’s two year run in downtown Tuscaloosa.Â
