It may be too early to talk about a North Mississippi style of pizza, but the northern part of the Magnolia State has some great pizzerias, such as Hernando’s Buon Cibo, Como’s Windy City Grill and Sardis’s TriBecca Allie Cafe, and now to that list we can add Oxford’s Fergndan’s Wood Fired Pizza. Located on Highway 30 at the easternmost border of Oxford, Fergndan’s is located in a Southern-style house under a stand of trees, and while I had attempted to eat there before, it had always been closed. This time, having called ahead to make sure it was open, I found it not only open but rather busy, and with good reason.
Fergndan’s not only looks like a house, but has something of the feel of one inside too, with very friendly staff. You can watch the pies being loaded into a brick kiln where their crusts get just the right amount of charring. Like any pizza place, Fergndan’s has calzones too, but they also have Italian sandwiches, salads and soups, as well as delightful baked goods from their sister business, Bremma’s Bakery. They also have a small selection of dessert pizzas, which includes a Reese’s Pizza. However, as my earlier attempts to visit revealed, Fergndan’s has somewhat limited hours. They are open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 8 PM and closed on Sundays.
