While looking for a parking place to eat at Jackson Soul Food, my cousin Marcy and I saw people setting up booths and barbecue grills for some sort of festival nearby, so after breakfast, we drove over to it. It turned out to be Folk Life Friday, an outdoor market and event in Overtown that occurs on certain Fridays each month. The biggest draw seems to be food, whether barbecue, Bahamian conch, Haitian food or fresh fruits and vegetables. Arts and crafts are also a big part of the event, and a DJ had set up at the far end of the pavilion. Apparently there are occasionally performing groups as well, but when we were there, the day’s event had just started at noon, so there wasn’t a whole lot going on yet.
