During SXSW, the closure of 6th Street leads to serious traffic problems, and much of the stress falls on Cesar Chavez (formerly First Street) which separates the Austin Convention Center from the river. The situation is made worse by people deliberately driving down it to get to the convention center, or to other parties, stages and food trucks because of SXSW. The street’s name was changed to honor Cesar Chavez, a Chicano union organizer who helped bring about the famous lettuce strike of the early 1970’s in California.
