The Ruby Slipper has been a great Mid-City place to get breakfast in New Orleans, and it now has a location in the downtown, one block southwest of Canal Street in the Pelham Hotel. Unfortunately, they decided to be closed on the Fourth, so I had to walk up to the Camellia Grill, another New Orleans institution that has opened a French Quarter location. Thankfully, they were open.

A last breakfast at Waterloo Ice House, Austin, before the long drive back to Memphis, Sunday, March 18, 2012

The Magnolia Cafe is another mainstay of SXSW. Like 24 Diner, it never closes, and there are two locations, but the one on Lake Austin Boulevard is closest to SXSW and always crowded. Thursday, March 15, 2012

The Omelettry is way out in North Austin on Burnet Road, but still it’s not uncommon to find musicians or panelists from SXSW starting their day there with a great breakfast. The Omelettry was founded in the 1970’s, and is one of the oldest breakfast restaurants in Austin.

For my first breakfast in Austin the week of South By Southwest, I chose a new restaurant on 10th Street called simply Bacon. I was immediately charmed by the attractive building, and I found that as the name suggests, bacon plays a prominent role on the menu, which features both breakfast items and burgers. They even have their own “house bacon”, which is cured on the premises. Bacon is located at 900 W 10th Street in Austin near Lamar Boulevard. Breakfast at Little Rock’s B-Side

B-Side is a hidden gem of a restaurant, a small breakfast spot next to its sister restaurant Lilly’s Dim Sum and Then Some in West Little Rock. Little Rock doesn’t have a whole lot of breakfast choices, and B-Side is worth finding.

Television shows used to make El Segundo the butt of jokes, perhaps because of the massive Chevron refinery that sits beside the town, but the downtown is actually rather charming, with a typical small-town look and feel. On my last morning in California, my iPhone led me to El Segundo to a burger joint called Good Stuff. But rather than burgers, I went for the breakfast, which was both the best and least expensive breakfast I had on my trip. November 25, 2011
