As bands and floats line up for Grambling’s Homecoming Parade, a festive atmosphere prevails. The parade always begins with the world-famous Grambling State University Marching Tiger Band leading the way down Main Street toward the campus.

Grambling, Louisiana Early Morning

Grambling, Louisiana streets can look deceptively empty on Grambling State University Homecoming morning, but that usually changes rather quickly, as people line the streets waiting for the parade. This year, it was extremely cold, but people still turned out.

Melrose’s Sound of the Mound Marching Band in the Southern Heritage Classic Parade, 2012

Melrose School became a full high school in 1946, the same year that Hamilton High School opened, and since then Melrose has been indelibly linked with the Orange Mound neighborhood. The school has been known for excellence in football, basketball and music, and the Sound of the Mound marching band is the favorite band in the Southern Heritage Classic Parade, 9/8/12

The Grambling Homecoming Parade ended near Eddie Robinson Stadium and the new Conrad Hutchinson Performing Arts Center, and the high school bands gathered there and had a sort of informal battle between the parade and the football game.
