Ready for some Memphis barbecue (Taken with Instagram at Jim Neely’s Interstate Bar-B-Que)

Much like Germantown’s horses, these brightly colored tigers have started appearing all over the University of Memphis campus and elsewhere in Memphis (Taken with Instagram at Ned R. McWherter Library)

New York artist Rashaad Newsome creates multi-media works that are part video, part performance art and part music production. “Swag” as the name suggests is a video/film work incorporating elements of hip-hop music and culture, juxtaposing these references against those from heraldry and other European sources. Newsome’s work was highlighted at the Powerhouse in the South Main Arts District of Memphis during the Live From Memphis Video Showcase, March 1, 2012

Sundress – “Derelict”

I’m sure I’m a little biased as Sundress comes from my hometown of Denton, TX, but I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them grow into a really solid psyche pop band over the last couple of years.  Their sound is reminiscent of the Smashing Pumpkins’ more out there material, combining alternative rock elements with spaced out soundscapes.  Their jams go into dreamy and ethereal territory as well, using feedback to convey emotion rather than to cover their music in mystery.  It’s easy to get lost in their sound, but there is enough pop energy to draw accessibility from mainstream audiences.  Sundress has honed their live presence as well.  I saw them a year back to a noticeably larger local crowd that was completely engaged from note one.
