Over the last few years, Memphis has gone from a city with limited coffee choices to a city with a bewildering array of coffee options. All have certain differences, but a fair number of the recent ones are mostly similar, being drive-through or walk-up only, and remarkably similar food and beverage offerings. But Dutch Bros is quite popular in other parts of the United States, so now that it has come to Shelby County, I drove out to Collierville to see if anything was different about it.
At first glance, Dutch Bros is not much different from other drive-up chains, such as Seven Brew, Shadrach’s or Scooter’s. It has the usual assortment of hot, cold and frozen coffee drinks, shakes, teas, energy drinks, cocoa, smoothies and sodas. It also has snacks, primarily around muffin tops, which is remarkably similar to Seven Brew. But Dutch Bros differs in two significant ways. They are the first coffee chain I have seen, including Starbucks, to offer sugar free versions of some of its drinks, which is a major game-changer for people who cannot have sugar or are looking to limit their sugar intake. The other innovation is protein coffees, which are coffees to which protein supplement has been added. I have not seen anything similar offered elsewhere. Unfortunately, what I did not see were any Dutch Bros coffee to take home and brew at your house. It can be had on the website, apparently, but not in the stores. Another location s apparently in the works for Bartlett.
