The Stooges Brass Band at the Levitt Shell in Overton Park, Memphis, TN, Thursday, 5/17/12

The 2012 seasons for the Levitt Shell in Memphis’ Overton Park opened with the Stooges Brass Band from New Orleans. The youthful band brings a hip-hop street edge to traditional New Orleans brass-band music, and there are enough NOLA residents in Memphis that there was soon a small group of second-liners in front of the stage, decked out in full regalia, complete with decorated umbrellas in true New Orleans style. They were just as amazing here in Memphis as they were in Oxford, MS in February. If you missed them, keep up with them at http://www.stoogesmusicgroup.com/ or like them on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/stoogesbrassbandpage. They play most Thursdays at the Hi-Ho Lounge on North Claiborne Avenue in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans, and believe me, it’s worth the drive to see them there.

Mojo Nixon did the final set for the Jim Dickinson Folk Festival last night, leaving a lot of tired but happy fans as the show ended around 11 PM.

North Mississippi Allstars Featuring @LutherDickinson @CodyDickinson at the Jim Dickinson Folk Fest

Last night was also my first time hearing the North Mississippi All-Stars in person. Luther Dickinson has clearly absorbed the North Mississippi hill country blues tradition in his playing, while brother Cody’s drumming shows the influence of African-American fife-and-drum bands. Their enjoyable set was followed by Mojo Nixon and the Yalobushwackers.

Last night at the Jim Dickinson Folk Festival in Memphis was my first time seeing Lucero live. I knew that they were alternative rock, but I didn’t know about their cool horn section and how melodic their music is. They were followed by the North Mississippi All-Stars, led by Luther and Cody Dickinson

Jim Dickinson Folk Festival at the @LevittShell, Overton Park, Memphis, 2011

Monday night September 19, 2011 was the occasion for a remarkable Memphis music concert at the Levitt Shell in honor of the late legendary Memphis producer and musician Jim Dickinson. The threat of rain didn’t deter anyone, and the event got underway with a set from Son of Mudboy, the successor to Memphis’ legendary Mudboy and the Neutrons.
