Food trucks parked in gas station lots do not normally attract my attention. They have become extremely common in Memphis, especially for Mexican food, but I am not someone that likes to eat in my car or outside, and unless the place is near enough to home, I probably would normally decline. As it is, I had driven past Addiction Smash Burgers many times without giving it much thought. However, when I read a positive review online that suggested it might be the best burger in Memphis, I decided I had to try it.
Smashburgers are a culinary trend that caught on in many bigger cities but never really has in Memphis. The theory behind them is that the thinly-pressed patty somewhat caramelizes on its edges, making a delicious and rather different burger. That certainly was true of the bacon cheese smashburger I ordered st Addiction. They take a fair amount of time to prepare, but there are cute red tables and seats between the food truck and an abandoned Rally’s building, and if the weather is pleasant, it is fun to sit out there and wait for your hot and freshly prepared food. Interestingly for a food-truck restaurant, the meals come in custom-printed bags with Addiction’s logo on them, which to me shows that these guys are in this for the long haul. If it wasn’t the very best burger I have ever had in Memphis, it was certainly better than average, and the fries were truly amazing.
However, some words of caution are in order. This is not a cheap place to eat. My burger, fries and drink came to about $16. But that’s almost what fast food meals cost these days. And this was certainly better than McDonalds or Burger King. Also, there is only outdoor seating unless you want to order to go and take it home. But Addiction is definitely worth a visit….you might even find it habit-forming.
