After dinner and coffee, I decided to take a brief stroll around downtown Asheville, but the extremely-cold weather made it hard to enjoy. Even so, Asheville is unique because unlike most cities, its downtown is thriving, full of intriguing restaurants and locally-owned shops. Several environmental organizations keep their headquarters in Asheville, perhaps because of its counter-culture image and nearness to the Smoky Mountains. It is also a growing center of indie music activity, and perhaps for that reason it’s sometimes nicknamed “Ashevegas.”
