Hip-hop shops are everywhere in Charlotte, 10/06/12
Shopping
Blowing Your Musical Mind at Manifest Charlotte (@ManifestCLT) @FyeGuy
Manifest (@ManifestCLT) is Charlotte’s largest record store, and undoubtedly one of the largest in the United States. Although it is owned by Transworld Entertainment, the parent company of FYE stores, it is large and has a more indie feel than the average FYE store. Prices are reasonable, and browsing through the extensive vinyl collection would take the better part of a day. Manifest is not to be missed on a trip to Charlotte.
Fresh Gear and Hot Mixtapes at the Black Republic in West Charlotte
The Black Republic is a new hip-hop shop in West Charlotte on West Boulevard just east of Remount Road. Besides an impressive selection of hip-hop clothing from Fly Society, Playwear, 10 Deep, Crooks and Castles and more, Black Republic also sells mixtapes by local DJ’s including Carolina legend DJ Chuck T. It’s kind of off the beaten path, but worth a detour.

Boat House Chairs, Horshoe Lake, Arkansas
The Boat House Chair Company in Horseshoe Lake, Arkansas makes these beautiful, comfortable and totally-unique chairs out of old water-skis. They are unlike any chairs I’ve seen before, and are not just a delight to look at, but a delight to sit in as well. Unfortunately, they range from about $350 and up, so I won’t be getting one anytime soon.

For 30 years, Next Door Records has been the place for music in Martin, TN, less than a block from the UT-Martin campus, 9/10/12
Walking Uptown on Magazine Street in New Orleans
Magazine Street in Uptown New Orleans was not named for a publication of any kind, but rather for the magazins or warehouses that were used to store goods shipped down the Mississippi River in early New Orleans. Today the street is four miles of unique and trendy shops, restaurants, coffee bars and gelato stands. Different from the French Quarter yet unmistakably New Orleans, it is a shopper’s paradise not to be missed. 7/5/12

Soul Survivor: Ugly Mike’s Records in Little Rock
Ugly Mike’s Records on West 12th in Little Rock is a neighborhood institution. The old building is full of hundreds of rap, blues, soul and gospel CD’s, many of them out of print, as well as old vinyl records. There is a vast selection of local Arkansas rappers, and posters from local artists adorn the walls.
Drumma Boy’s Listening Party at R. Sole Memphis
Drumma Boy had the listening party for his new mixtape at a hip-hop clothing and shoe boutique called R. Sole in the Laurelwood Shopping Center, and that was really great because I wouldn’t have known about that shop otherwise. A lot of Memphis rap artists, producers and promoters were in the house, including DJ Bay and myself from Select-o-Hits, First Degree, G.K. and Li’l Pat.
