For residents of Northeast Mississippi, Tupelo has always had the feel of “the big city,” with a look and atmosphere that belies its relatively low population. Among other things, the city has always had a great food scene, and it only seems to be getting better. Although Tupelo is closer to Oxford than it is to Starkville, the new Bulldog Burger brings the taste of Starkvegas to Elvis’ hometown.
Owned by the company that owns the excellent Harvey’s restaurants and The Grille at Fair Park, Bulldog Burger is certainly not fast food by any stretch. With a sleek, modern exterior that includes an outdoor patio, the interior has the dark, wood-paneled look of a fancy steakhouse, with comfortable seating and an ample-sized bar. The menu is of course centered around burgers, but there is also a Mahi Mahi sandwich and a Nashville hot chicken sandwich. As is my usual preference, I ordered my burger medium rare, and plain except for cheddar cheese and bacon. It came out big and juicy, just as I like, and I was thrilled to see tater tots on the menu, which are hard to come by these days. The ones I got were golden brown, crispy, and garnished with a green herb of some sort, possibly cilantro.
For sweet endings, Bulldog offers Donut Bread Pudding, an Oreo Smash, and several flavors of milk shakes. It is definitely worth a visit the next time you are in Tupelo, plus there are locations in Starkville and Ridgeland as well.
