Walking Uptown on Magazine Street in New Orleans

Magazine Street in Uptown New Orleans was not named for a publication of any kind, but rather for the magazins or warehouses that were used to store goods shipped down the Mississippi River in early New Orleans. Today the street is four miles of unique and trendy shops, restaurants, coffee bars and gelato stands. Different from the French Quarter yet unmistakably New Orleans, it is a shopper’s paradise not to be missed. 7/5/12

A Storm on the Swamp

Our tour of the Honey Island Swamp was cut short by a sudden thunderstorm, and we were soon drenched to the bone. When it became apparent that the storm wasn’t stopping anytime soon, we returned to the dock.

Alligators in Honey Island Swamp

Not surprisingly, alligators are common in the Honey Island Swamp. Our tour guide explained to us that they are not particularly aggressive however, and the last human fatality from an alligator in Louisiana was in the 1950’s. These alligators seem to like marshmallows and hot dogs.

Seclusion and Beauty at Arkansas’ Eden Isle

West of Heber Springs, Arkansas, the aptly-named Eden Isle development is home to the famous Red Apple Inn and restaurant. The community is really an island in Greers Ferry Lake, and visitors enjoy boating, fishing, golf, tennis and swimming.

The Postcard Inn on St. Pete Beach

I had expected to get into St. Pete Beach around 1 or 2 in the morning, but given the time I killed in Tallahassee kicking it with the folks at Da Plugg Music and More, I ended up getting there at 4 AM instead. My beachfront motel, the Postcard Inn on the Beach, was a boutique hotel, an old motel that had been interestingly restored. Unfortunately, due to the late hour I arrived, by the time I woke up, it was almost time to check out, so I did not get a chance to get in the water, but I did manage to snap a number of photos.

Hi-Fi Jazz Cafe, Tallahassee

When i got to Tallahassee, near the Florida A & M campus on Adams Street, I happened upon this really cool-looking jazz cafe. Unfortunately, it was not open on Thursday night, but I took some pictures anyway.
