Monkey Nest Coffee proclaims itself “An Austin Original”, and it has earned something of a name for itself in a city that could rightly be called the Seattle of the South. I’m not sure if Austin’s fascination with coffee has been noted elsewhere, but I noticed it upon my first visit to the city some years ago. Coffee bars proliferate, and one can easily pass four or five such places in driving along one street, such as Lamar or Guadalupe. Even more unusual is that the majority of these coffee bars are not national chains, but are rather locally-owned establishments. That as many of them survive as they do is a sign of Austin’s love affair with java, but it also ensures a competitiveness that tends to improve the city’s coffee product- there’s too many coffee bars for any one of them to get by with mediocre product or service, so when a place like Monkey Nest Coffee gets talked about, there’s likely a reason. One reason would be that Monkey Nest only serves organic coffee, and another would be that they occasionally book live music. Finally, there is a light food menu, with breakfast tacos, salads and sandwiches. Coffee drinks were well-made and reasonably priced. Monkey Nest Coffee is at 5353 Burnet Road in Austin. Call them at (512) 505-8033.
