At the Smokey City Block Party In North Memphis

Smokey City is one of North Memphis’ oldest neighborhoods, allegedly named for the smoke from fires that early residents used to cook their meals and warm their houses. Each summer, the neighborhood sponsors a block party and picnic with a DJ, kids’ activities and plenty of grilled chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs. 6/2/12

On Saturday June 2, 2012, there was a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Lewis-Davis Park in Orange Mound, Memphis, TN, and the weather was perfect for it, an unseasonably-cool 75 degrees. There was exciting action, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, and good fun. 

Tribecca Allie Cafe is an upscale brick-oven pizzeria on the Main Street of Sardis, Mississippi, bringing a big-city feel to a small town in Panola County. Tribecca was awarded second place at the American Pizza Championships in Orlando, Florida, and is definitely worth the drive from Memphis or elsewhere in North Mississippi, but hours are limited, so call or check the website here http://tribeccaallie.com/ before driving. 

Although Verona, Mississippi has become a suburb of Tupelo, there are still remnants of its old downtown along Main Street and the railroad tracks, Memorial Day, 5/28/12

Toccopola is a virtual ghost town between Oxford and Pontotoc, south of Highway 6. Although it is not completely uninhabited, its town square has completely fallen into ruin. There are some old and historic houses, churches, and a cemetery. Memorial Day, 5/28/12
