The Legendary White Swan at the corner 12th and Chicon in East Austin looks like the kind of place where one should hear authentic blues or soul. The 60’s/70’s era furnishings, low ceiling and blues posters all help to create an ambiance of a soul shack circa 1977. So I was unpleasantly surprised last SXSW to find that most of the music booked there was rock, and not even the mellow indie rock, but harder, rougher stuff. So this year, when I heard that the
Little Elmore Reed blues band was playing at the White Swan, I decided to go, and I’m glad I did. The band plays a very traditional style of jump blues, interspersed with ballads that show the influence of South Louisiana music. Couples actually packed the dancefloor at one point, and with it being SXSW week, there were a lot of guests sitting in on individual tunes. The Little Elmore Reed band plays at the White Swan each and every Monday.
