Exquisite Coffees and Baked Goods at Dallas’ Cultivar

While driving from Austin to Mississippi, a friend and I decided we wanted coffee when we got to Dallas. Since it was a Sunday, there was a risk that some coffee bars might not be open, so I looked at the Yelp app on my iPhone and saw a place called Cultivar, which was very close to the interstate, but in a most unlikely place, the old business district of Oak Cliff. It proved to be an inspired choice.
Cultivar is a micro-roaster, roasting small batches of some of the world’s best coffee, always ethically sourced. Although their main business is the sale of roasted beans for home brewing, their coffee shops carry the usual array of cappuccinos, lattes and espressos, along with a small selection of baked goods. After enjoying a breve latte, I purchased a bag of Salvadoran whole bean coffee to take home. I also have to mention the sleek, modernistic interior of the coffee bar, which is bright, cheerful and welcoming. Our visit to Cultivar was altogether pleasant.

Dallas’ A.Dd+ Pleasantly Surprises at @A3C @ADdHoe @gravySLIM @ParisPershun #A3C2013

Perhaps I had been under a rock, but I had never heard of Dallas hip-hop duo A.Dd+ before I saw them at A3C, yet I found them to be very impressive, and not at all what I would have expected in a rap act from Dallas, with a style that is based largely on lyrical skill. So far, they have released a mixtape and two albums, the most recent of which is Loosies which was released in 2011.

Hopdoddy Burger Bar (@hopdoddy) in University Park, Dallas

#001 Hopdoddy Burger Bar While driving from Memphis to Austin last week on Sunday for South By Southwest, I decided to stop at Hopdoddy Burger Bar in Dallas for dinner, since I had eaten at their South Austin location last year. The somewhat bizarre name comes from the restaurant’s twin loves- “hop” for beer, and “doddy” a Scottish slang for cows. The burgers are made from organic, hormone-free beef, the fries are cut in-house daily, the buns are freshly baked, and there is an extensive craft beer menu. Altogether a fun, delicious and reasonably-priced place to enjoy burgers-one of the truly great things about Texas.
