Memphis Music and Heritage Festival

Memphis’ Main Street Mall is the center of attention during the Memphis Music and Heritage Festival, 9/1/12

The Memphis Music and Heritage Festival is a 26-year-old free music festival held each year on the Main Street Mall in downtown Memphis. Sponsored by the non-profit Center for Southern Folklore, the event offers four stages of local Memphis music and a fifth stage for regional cooking demonstrations. Various vendors display regional folk art, and there is plenty of food and drink from vendors and nearby restaurants.

Tennessee Mass Choir at the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival 2011

The Tennessee Mass Choir is one of Memphis’ finest gospel choirs, and their performance at the Memphis Music and Heritage Festival was especially noteworthy, with legendary drummer Edward “Hot” Cleveland and bassist Jackie Clark backing them up. The rain could not dampen their enthusiasm, and it was a masterful performance.

Rain from Tropical Storm Lee made the second day of the Memphis Music and Heritage Festival a wash-out, but there was some great music anyway. The kids from the Stax Music Academy were on the stage when I got there.
