Within the inner-city neighborhoods of St. Petersburg, one encounters a number of stands and small restaurants offering “garlic crabs.” I didn’t get a chance to try them, but people I met told me that they are really good.

Haslam’s Book Store claims to be the largest bookstore in Florida, and must certainly be one of the oldest as well, as it was founded in 1933. It has room after room of old and new books, including a large section of books about St. Petersburg, and an extensive local fiction section.

22nd Street South, known as the “Deuce Deuce”, is the historic heart of Black St. Petersburg, and once a street of entertainment to rival Memphis’ Beale Street or Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn. The years have not necessarily been kind to 22nd Street, but a number of historic buildings remain, including the Royal Theater, which is now used as a youth performance center. Nearby streets have an incredible number of churches (at least one in every block, it seems) as well as an interesting wood-carving shop and a recording studio, where I met the rapper Fo Sheezy who was hard at work recording material for an upcoming album or mixtape.

New Millennium Fashions on South 34th Street in St. Petersburg is a clothing store, of course, but it is also a full-line music store, full of CDs and DVDs. I even found a book about the history of Carnival in Trinidad!
