The American Red Cross paid an Indianapolis city planner to design a new Columbus, Kentucky at the top of the bluffs after the Flood of 1927 had destroyed the historic old town. While some aspects of the city plan can be seen in the town of today, much of the plan was never built, suggesting that most Columbus residents opted not to return after the flood.
