While the French Quarter is New Orleans’ most tourist-intensive district, there is still much that is unique and beautiful about it, particularly on the quieter blocks further back from Decatur Street and Jackson Square. The boom of a bass drum or a few tuba notes can send you walking in a different direction, looking for the source of the sound (and some new adventure). Beyond the overpriced souvenir shops are some of the city’s better record shops, art galleries and used book stores, and some of the city’s best music can be encountered unexpectedly on the streets.
